Al Tucci Creates Art

Al Tucci creates art that specializes in a colorful Art Deco style. Many of Al’s paintings have been juried into prestigious art exhibits. Al does love it when he sells a piece that is at an art gallery. Most of all, Al enjoys the painting commissions that involves a life story or a fantasy.

To create his art, Al Tucci paints with Gouache (opaque watercolor) as it is much thicker than watercolor. Gouache, is a water-medium paint consisting of natural pigment, water and an binding agent. Gouache has a considerable history, going back for at least twelve centuries. It sits on the surface of the paper and other layers of paint. Mixing color and finding the correct consistency for a smooth finish and brush flow are both challenging and joyful.

For most of his art, Al Tucci creates art that is centered around work as a theatrical costume and scene designer.  It also included a large amounts of research in colors and fabrics. Every aspect of the theatrical design must be planned out on concept by a design and directorial team.

For costume design, one has to establish the correct period silhouette or line. Then find fabric swatches and samples to share with colleagues.  Those samples are evaluated for color and texture response as well as budget. The process of designing a theatrical production can take months. The end of the design process ends with a finished product on stage under special lighting.

After nearly forty years, Al Tucci creates art pieces of a theatrical nature. His process of creating art is the same process he used in threatre production. The idea, the image, almost always tied to movement or strong rhythm is essential to what he does.
